Telecommuting: How It Supports A Green Lifestyle

These days people are more interested in saving time energy, and ways to make their lives easier and more productive all at once. Our world is changing fast and sometimes it is hard to keep up.

Being a Baby boomer in a world filled with so many technical challenges to learn and keep up with can be a little intimidating. It is important though to familiarize yourself and try to keep up to date with how to stay connected without losing yourself in the mix. But working from home has improved my overall attitude about work, and has helped me to be more productive, and creative while at the same time helping to do my part in working towards a Greener way of living.

How I am benefiting from working at home

First I am saving money on gas every week! And although the price of gas has gone down, I am taking that money that I saved, and putting it towards investing in my business. I choose my own hours to work and by working in blocks of time, I can manage to get many things accomplished in an allotted amount of time, and also take breaks and a walk or do some yoga stretches in between.

Eating a healthy meal through the day is important to me being vegan, and health conscious of what I am feeding my body as well as my mind. I can eat at leisure setting a block of time, just for eating as well as for breaks and I still get everything accomplished in an efficient and timely manner. Still being professional and at the same time taking good care of myself, so I can work at my optimum best.

Telecommuting can ease the stress of having to commute back and forth to work in bad weather. It will definitely save some wear and tear on your vehicle and tires and save the time it would take to get back and forth from work. It can also save you money on dry cleaning costs!

Another great reason to work from home and help support a green lifestyle, because dry cleaning uses Perchloroethylene, a toxic chemical that is very harmful to our environment, and if you are concerned with helping reduce toxins you can look up where to find a green dry cleaner in your area instead.

Working from home enables you to work for longer periods and more comfortably by being in surroundings that are stress-free and conducive to your overall benefit. Create a workspace free of clutter. Make sure you have some water to keep hydrated. Have all of the tools and implements you may need close by to help you work efficiently, and so you do not have to keep getting up and down. Turn off all distractions unless some soft music in the background helps. And enjoy creating those masterpieces!

Some Things to Think About For Work From Home Scenarios

Nowadays, more and more business users work from home than ever. You save time by not having to commute that far from your home to the office and use that commute time to being more efficient by getting more things done at the office and/or spend more quality time with your family, spend more time take care of yourself to become healthier by going to the gym, or even put more time into work because you now have more time to do so.

There are some things that businesses must keep in mind when allowing their employees to work from home, and one of them is IT Security. Businesses have to make sure that the employees are communicating securely to the corporate office when they are working remotely (either from the employee’s home or from a coffee shop somewhere). One of the very first suggestions is to make sure that business users are connecting with a virtual provide network tunnel to the corporate office. This creates a virtual and encrypted tunnel from their remote home office or from any other remote location. After that, all communicates to the corporate office is encrypted and transferred securely through the tunnel. Corporate users can decide whether they want to allow split tunneling or not.

Split tunneling is a feature on the virtual private network (VPN) tunnel and a business decision to send all traffic (including the internet’s traffic) through the tunnel to the corporate office. This way, the users’ laptop is protected from accessing any insecure and unsafe internet site. The corporate may also have a way to monitor and protect that VPN tunnel’s traffic so that any if there is any viruses or malwares are detected, it will have a way to stop that from infecting the whole network. There is a downside to this however. The downside is that there will be a lot more traffic going through the corporate’s network. So, the company has to decide what is best in terms of priority.

If businesses decide to allow split tunneling for remote users working from home, it should make sure that the users’ laptop has some security application installed such as firewall, ant-virus and anti-malware application enabled to detect and block, drop or prevent malicious traffic from entering and infecting others. Several solutions exist for this and one method is to use the Cisco AMP for Endpoints.

Today’s corporate end gateway firewalls are a lot more sophisticated that they do some detection and policy checks when users connect to the office to make sure that the laptops have all the security features enabled and if not, the users’ laptop is prompted to install anything that the laptop needs to comply with the corporate security policy and standard. That way, there is no need to worry that the network is unprotected and insecure.

Create With Passion

Be eager, be determined and no matter how tedious it may seem at times keep on pushing. Have zeal, drive and be devoted to your project. Others we be able to tell if your serious about the progress of your work or not. Never rush, set out blocks of time so you can take your time and not leave any loose ends, finish what you start. I try to do one project at a time. When you tend to bounce around you leave loose ends all over the place. You want to start and finish and move on to the next thing. Just because you work from home doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have order or a daily plan. Just like a 9-5 outside of the home pick a block of time that is strictly dedicated daily to your project from start to finish. Let your answering service take messages and put that phone down, as a matter of fact turn off all distractions so you can stay focused. I like to listen to music sometimes when I am working on something but even sometimes if I find it distracting I am not hesitant to cut it off.

Organization is the key to keeping things flowing. A place for everything and everything in its place so you don’t waste work time hunting for things. Lay it all out in your work space like an assembly line.

When you take pride in your work, you protect it. Keep finished projects covered, accidents happen. All it takes is a knocked over cup of coffee or soda pop on something you are making to cause a disaster especially if it’s something made of easily stained materials. Eat and drink before or after your start working, better safe than sorry. All in all work at a pace and on a daily schedule that is good for you so you won’t burn yourself out. Find a way to balance your time if you’re a homemaker or stay at home mom so that you can take care of your children, your home and your crafts. Every now and then take a little time for yourself. There is nothing wrong with a short break or two during the day to give your brain and body a rest. Just develop a system and try to stick to it. Remember the more persistent and consistent you are in developing your craft the quicker and bigger your inventory grows.
